I’ve been working at the Nova Scotia Community College for almost six years. I don’t normally talk about the place on my blog. I feel that’s a bit private. But today I want to. I love my job. I work with great people. I like the culture at the NSCC. Everywhere you look, you see people who really care and work hard to make a difference.
However, in all those six years, I’ve never experienced a day like today. No classes were scheduled today. Instead, 1600 of my colleagues and over 10,000 learners spent the day doing service learning and volunteer projects across the province as a way to say thank you to Nova Scotians for the support they’ve given us. The project was called Reach Out to Nova Scotia and you can read more about it here. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to coordinate and manage this humongous project, so my hat goes off to those who did — especially Sara & Craig. (Sara, have you slept at all this past month?)
As for me, I joined a small group of faculty who went to a farm in Kingsport, a small community in the Annapolis Valley. We picked over two tons of squash for Feed Nova Scotia. It was a beautiful, sunny (but chilly) day. It was wonderful to be out in a field instead of behind a desk. And I can’t describe the feeling I had when the Feed Nova Scotia truck pulled into the field and we watched the squash being loaded on. We could see the impact we’d made. What a great day.

Hi Carolyn,
Stumbled across your blog. Awesome pictures! It was truly an amazing day. The effort put forth by all involved is something that I will not forget. The campus teams made this happen! I agree with you NSCC is a great place to work!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Reach Out to Nova Scotia.
Cheers,
Craig
